Thomas Kinkade Cause Of Death: Painter Died Of Drug And Alcohol Overdose, Coroner Rules

Reuters | Posted: 05/07/2012 9:55 pm Updated: 05/07/2012 10:30 pm

LOS ANGELES, May 7 (Reuters) - "Painter of Light" Thomas Kinkade died of accidental acute intoxication from alcohol and an anti-anxiety medication, according to autopsy report made public on Monday by local NBC Bay Area TV.

The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office reported Kinkade's cause of death as "acute ethanol and Diazepam intoxication" and manner of death as "accident," according to the NBC station. Diazepam is the active ingredient in Valium.

A Santa Clara County Coroner's investigator confirmed to Reuters that the autopsy report on Kinkade had been completed but said he could not release it after business hours.

Kinkade, the self-proclaimed "Painter of Light," whose works captivated millions of Americans despite the scorn of many art critics, died in April at his home in Northern California at the age of 54.

His brother told the San Jose Mercury News newspaper that the painter had battled alcoholism for several years and suffered a relapse before he died.

Patrick Kinkade said his brother had been burdened in recent years by a separation from his wife, financial troubles and the low opinion of his work by critics.

Thomas Kinkade was arrested for drunk driving in 2010, the same year his company filed for bankruptcy. Art galleries reported a surge in sales of Kinkade's paintings following his death. (Reporting by Dan Whitcomb; Editing by Cynthia Johnston and Jackie Frank)

Many critics are envious and frustrated artists themselves...maybe that's why so many of them celebrate mediocrity...it's like the line from the country song "People throw rocks at things that shine." Anyone who accomplishes anything in life will be criticized and ridiculed, just goes with the territory...at least Mr.K left a legacy which is more than most of us can say...the world can be a savage place, perhaps death is a release from suffering. RIP.

This is sad, his paintings did not deserve what the so called critics said about them. They were innovative and very good.

Too commercial? Because they were popular they must not be good? I think what Thomas captured was a mood and it spoke to people. While I might not have hung his style in my home I did appreciate the talent. He should be proud of what he accomplished as very few painters actually have a following during their lifetime. I see nothing wrong with becoming commercial as it pays the bills for starters. That's like putting down the person for winning the popularity contest.

His paintings are bright and happy. They are true to life. I have a couple of them. Art is being able to show things as they are. I wish I had half the talent that he did.

Art is what the beholder sees. That is why we are all so different. There are many forms of art that aren't my taste but that doesn't make it not art. I am saddened of how he died but he was a very talented man and his paintings would draw your eye into the picture and were very homey to me.

Well, I know I have never ingested alcohol or valium by "accident". Besides his poor artistry and alcoholism, there was no mention of his abusive treatment of female employees.

What a shame to lose him at such a young age. Sounds like he was depressed.

Sometimes I think half of America is intoxicated. Maybe they SHOULD legalise pot. It seems far safer than booze and pills. Maybe if conservatives switched their drugs of choice they would mellow out.

Critics come and go. Who ever remembers a critic? A critic is someone who is far below, in talent, and common sense, and less attuned to what the populace embraces, than the one they critisize. I still have sore window art my father bought during the Great Depression. He and I watched the painter while he stood in the store window painting his "pop" art. I have "paint by numbers" work my mother did. We have needle points our children made for us after they grew up. Art is in the" eye of the beholder." If I had worried about critics I would never had been successful in my work.

Art transports us to another place and Thomas Kinkade with his mastery of light and beauty transported millions of people to his dreamscapes. His works will always have appeal and commercial value. Someone asked what is "art" ? it is hard to define but usually a hard and fast rule is it should either entertain or educate or both. You can love it, you can hate it but if it meets this criteria it is art. RIP Thomas, we will always love you. Very sad to hear you suffered inside while the world admired your talent. Those critics cannot come up with a stupid stick figure to save their lives.

Liquor mixed with pills takes many lives. They get intoxicated and don't realize what they are doing or how many pills they are taking. Liquor with Xanax has taken 2 people I know personally
