Logitech launches Skype cameras for HDTVs
By Steve Donohue
Logitech (Nasdaq: LOGI) said it will soon begin selling a "TV Cam HD" camera that broadband Internet subscribers will be able to use to make videophone calls through the TV.
The product, which will retail for $200, could pose competition for Comcast's (Nasdaq: CMCSA) Skype On Xfinity service, which it recently began selling in several major markets. But the Logitech cameras could also create more demand for high-speed Internet services.
Comcast charges its customers $9.99 monthly for the Skype product, which is integrated with its Xfinity digital cable user interface. Consumers that buy the Logitech camera won't need to pay subscription fees to make Skype video calls on TV.
